A “Back-Up Caregiver” is a passionate volunteer who has the desire and ability to go above and beyond normal service, and who is willing to go through a rigorous screening and training process in order to become able to assist CH’s paid staff members with the duties of mentoring and directly supervising the children who have been placed in our care. This opportunity is not for everyone, but those who do have the calling and drive to assume the Back-Up Caregiver role will be offering vital help to CH and the blessed ministry that the Lord has tasked us with. The process to be considered to become a Back-Up Caregiver includes:
- A screening interview & campus tour w/ the Director of Children’s Services
- Submitting to State of Texas Central Registry, Criminal History and FBI fingerprint-based background checks
- Submitting to a required initial (and any subsequent random) drug test & Tuberculosis screening
- Signing & abiding by CH’s Statement of Faith, Duty to Report Abuse/Neglect, Client Confidentiality, and Hold Harmless Agreement forms
- Once a volunteer has been approved to become a Back-Up Caregiver, various state & agency mandated training will be provided (both initially & on-going/as needed), including:
- 20+ hours of classroom & online instruction in topics such as Emergency Behavior Intervention, First Aid/CPR, Psychotropic Medications, Transportation Safety, Abuse Awareness & Reporting, the Sanctuary Model of Trauma-Informed Care, and both the State of Texas & Christ’s Haven’s policies and procedures
- A minimum of 20 hours of supervised shadowing of paid CH direct-care staff members while working with children and performing job-related duties.
- After this process has been completed, the Back-Up Caregiver will become eligible to provide planned, as-needed and emergency supervision of children. As a volunteer, the Caregiver understands that he/she will not be compensated financially for their service, outside of any costs associated with the screening/training process and such benefits as meals, transportation, lodging, etc. that may be associated with any specific assignment the Caregiver is offered and accepts. The Caregiver also understands that he/she may be dismissed from their volunteer duties at any time, for any reason, without prior notice. All such decisions are on the final authority of the Director of Children’s Services and/or the Executive Director.
